19th UKPF Early Careers Meeting

The next UKPF ECM will take place on Friday 9th January hosted by the Centre for Planetary Sciences at UCL/Birkbeck, in Bloomsbury, London.

The Early Careers Meeting is an annual national meeting of early career planetary science researchers in the UK, including masters students, PhD students and post-docs. The UKPF ECM is designed to bring together early career researchers from across the UK for a day of networking and knowledge sharing. This event provides a supportive environment for early career scientists to present their research to peers and receive constructive feedback, offering valuable preparation for larger, international conferences. Presentations will include both talks and posters, showcasing the diversity of work taking place in planetary science.

Registration:

* Registration now closed *

This meeting is open to Early Career Researchers, including postgraduate masters and PhD students as well as postdoctoral researchers within their first two years.

Registration is free for all attendees.

The registration deadline is Wednesday 17th December 2025 - Registration is now closed.

We encourage attendees to join us in person, but virtual attendance will also be offered for those unable to travel.

Abstract submission has now closed.

Travel and (child)care grants:

** Travel and care grant applications are now closed **

To support participation, and thanks to our sponsors - the UK Space Agency and the Royal Astronomical Society - we are pleased to be able to offer travel/(child)care grants for UK-based students and early-career postdocs attending the ECM. The grants can cover:
  • Travel and accommodation costs - Please bear in mind that this is a one-day conference, so accommodation will only be funded if you have special circumstances and specifically require it.
  • Expenses for childcare or to cover caring (e.g. for a partner or family member due to illness, frailty, disability etc) for the day to enable attendance.
Grant application deadline: Monday 15th December.

Location:

This year the meeting will be hosted by the Centre for Planetary Sciences (the ‘CPS’) at UCL/Birkbeck. The meeting will take place at the Birkbeck Clore Centre, in the heart of London’s Bloomsbury area, also close to UCL.

The CPS is a centre of excellence for research in planetary sciences, based on a collaboration between three UCL departments of Earth Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, and Space and Climate Physics (MSSL), and the School of Natural Sciences at Birkbeck, University of London. For more information on the CPS, please see the CPS website.
Travel to the Birkbeck Clore Management Centre:

Torrington Square,

London,
WC1E 7JL
Birkbeck is surrounded by Tube and mainline rail stations. There are a few options we recommend for travel by train:
  1. Underground to Russell Square station (on the Piccadilly line between Holborn to the west and King's Cross St Pancras to the east), where we are an 8-minute walk away.
  2. We are a 12-minute walk away from Euston Station, which operates overground and underground lines (Northern and Victoria lines)
  3. Underground to Euston Square (Metropolitan, Circle, and Hammersmith & City lines) which is a 9-minute walk away.

Many buses pass down nearby Gower Street or go via Russell Square.

To plan your journey to Birkbeck using public transport, see the Transport for London Journey Planner.

We do not recommend arriving by car as we are not able to provide parking permits and central London parking facilities are both limited and often expensive. Please bear in mind that the Congestion Charge and ULEZ charges also apply.

Further information about parking and getting to the Birkbeck Bloomsbury campus can be found on the Birkbeck website: Birkbeck location and parking information.

If you are a wheelchair user or have other physical accessibility issues, please contact [email protected] as soon as possible and we can make appropriate arrangements.

For enquiries regarding accessibility or registration, please contact us at [email protected].

Further information about the meeting will be posted here in due course. We look forward to your registration and seeing you in January 2026!

Information about the previous meeting at the University of Oxford can be found here and a summary here.

Please subscribe to the UKPF mailing list to ensure you don't miss future announcements.
