PROMOTING PLANETARY RESEARCH IN THE UK

UKPF Annual General Meeting

Our first Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on the 12th November at 13:30 GMT. This will be a fully virtual event and is open to everyone in the community from all backgrounds and careers stages, in order to best represent the ideas and views of the whole community.

Meeting agenda
This is a fully virtual event and will be open to everyone in the community from all backgrounds and careers stages, so we can best represent the ideas and views of the whole community. We will ask members to vote to ratify 2 motions; our 2025 constitution and our committee positions and candidates for each position (presented during the meeting). In order to vote on these motions you will need to be a fellow of either; the Geological Society of London or the Royal Astronomical Society.
Three years ago we set out on a mission to evolve the UK Planetary Forum so that it was better able to fulfil its mission to “promote planetary research in the UK among scientists” as a response to how the community has expanded and matured since our inception in 1996.

Over the last two years we formed an expanded transition committee to help develop the capacity of UKPF and have become a Special Interest Group of the Geological Society of London (GSL) and an Affiliated Group of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) to better form a fill out mission.

Currently the UKPF runs this mailing list, the Annual ECR meeting, hosts a planetary science session at the National Astronomy Meeting and has stewardship for the British Planetary Science Conference.

In the coming years we want to use the platform of the special interest group to bring outreach opportunities to the planetary community, strengthen how we represent planetary science within the developing funding landscape and continue to engage and support researchers in UK planetary science at all career stages and from all backgrounds.
At the AGM we will:
  1. Present to you what we have done in the past two years, and what our scope and vision is going forwards.
  2. Present the election results for new committee members - We are creating a formalised committee with distinct roles, which candidates have been elected by vote. The details of the positions and their responsibilities can be found here.
  3. Hold a town-hall style Q&A session addressing community questions submitted prior to and during the AGM.

This is an important opportunity to help the UK planetary science community represent itself. We want UKPF to represent diversity in disciplines and communities across the country and need your help to make that happen!
